RETIRO TERMINAL STATION

The Retiro-Mitre Station, or simply Retiro, is one of the seven central railway stations in Buenos Aires. Inaugurated in 1915, it is the terminal station of the General Mitre Railroad and the Mitre line of the same name for suburban services to the north of Greater Buenos Aires. With 44 million passengers a year, it is the second busiest station in Argentina. The design corresponded to the pattern established in Europe at the end of the 19th century, dividing the building into two large sectors.

For the construction of the great hall, the confectioneries and the box office sector an aesthetic criterion was followed, with fine finishes mainly influenced by Edwardian architecture. The interiors, with more than 20,000 m² of ceilings, were lined with majolica tiles provided by the British Royal Doulton and lit with Florentine-style torches.
In 2016 the enhancement works began. Much of the internal infrastructure will be renovated: the floors will regain their original granite-like color and the walls and columns will be cleaned of advertisements to preserve the traditional structure. The central oval where the ticket booths are located will no longer have peeling paint at some ends and the row dividers and windows will enhance its appearance. Within this improvement plan the automatic backup of electrical energy is incorporated with 4 generators of 320 kW each working in parallel. We are happy to have been able to participate in this update.
